At the Cricinfo Honours Awards 2026, where he was recognized as one of the top 25 cricketers of the century, Ashwin spoke about the challenges faced by the team, which was down several key players, including captain Virat Kohli. He recalled the crucial partnership with Hanuma Vihari in the preceding Sydney Test, which helped India draw level in the series.

Ashwin also highlighted the 'box-office' reactions of then head coach Ravi Shastri during the tense Gabba Test. He described a moment when Shastri, frustrated by a dropped catch, threw a bottle that shattered against a wall, underscoring the intense atmosphere.
