Audi's Unexpected Pitfall: Gravel Halts Hulkenberg's Race
Audi blamed airborne gravel for Nico Hulkenberg's unexpected retirement from the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Stones from Liam Lawson's car reportedly hit an emergency cutoff switch on Hulkenberg's vehicle, causing a complete power shutdown. Despite starting in the top 10, Hulkenberg was forced to retire from the race.
Audi has attributed Nico Hulkenberg's early exit from the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix to airborne gravel. During Sunday's race, Hulkenberg retired when his car unexpectedly lost power, a mishap initially suspected to be a mechanical failure.
However, the team later clarified that gravel thrown up by Liam Lawson's car activated an emergency electrical cutoff switch on Hulkenberg's Audi, leading to a complete system shutdown. Hulkenberg lamented, "Liam ran slightly wide ahead of me, hitting the gravel, which spewed stones that triggered our car's emergency safety switch."
Racing director Allan McNish confirmed that the safety fire switch was hit, activating its automatic shutdown function. Hulkenberg, who started in the top 10, had hoped to secure points before the incident forced him out. Lawson finished the race in eighth place.
