Yankees send Torres (core) back to N.Y. for tests

Gleyber Torres exited a game early for the second time in three days, and the Yankees sent the infielder back to New York for a medical exam, manager Aaron Boone said late Tuesday night. Torres left in the third inning of the Yankees' 9-4 road win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, and the team announced he was dealing with "core pain."

The same ailment caused Torres to leave the team's 7-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. That night, tests at a hospital ruled out a hernia. Torres, who was 0-for-3 on Sunday before leaving, returned to action Monday in Baltimore and went 0-for-5 as the designated hitter. He started at second base Tuesday and was 0-for-2 prior to exiting.

"Similar sensation he was having when he came out the other night," Boone said postgame. "We'll just continue to get to the bottom of it as best we can. Hopefully, have more information for you guys (Wednesday). ... "When I DH-ed him (Monday), we thought he was through it and good to go. The DH wasn't about easing him back. It was more picking that day and kind of our alignment and everything. Even when I saw him this morning, he felt good and really wanted to play the field. We'll just continue to see what it is the best we can."

Torres, 22, has been an All-Star in each of his two major league seasons. He is hitting .281 with 23 homers and 62 RBIs in 105 games this year after batting .271 with 24 homers and 77 RBIs in 123 games as a rookie. He has played 67 games at shortstop this year and 39 at second base. The Yankees currently have 16 players on the injured list.
