Tigers release 2B Harrison, add RHP Jackson

The Detroit Tigers released veteran infielder Josh Harrison after reinstating him from the 60-day injured list on Friday. A shoulder sprain and a hamstring injury that required surgery sidelined Harrison, 32, for most of the season. He made 34 starts at second base and batted .176 (24-for-136), with seven doubles, a triple, a home run and eight RBIs.

In his nine-year career, which included parts of eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Harrison has a .273 average with 53 home runs, 277 RBI and 79 stolen bases. He is a two-time All-Star. During spring training, Harrison signed a one-year, $2 million contract after the Pirates declined a $10.5 million club option for 2019.

In other moves Friday, the Tigers released right-hander Sandy Baez to make room on their 40-man roster for veteran right-hander Edwin Jackson, who was scheduled to start against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.
