English player Shaun Wright Phillips has announced his retirement from football at the age of 37 on the show Soccer AM. The former England international had not been with a club since leaving Phoenix Rising FC in 2017.
Wright-Phillips said on Soccer AM, "I was trying to hold on to [my career] for as long as possible, but over the last few weeks, I have decided it is time to be official and say: I am officially retired.
"I knew growing up it was not something that lasts forever, but after I had my last operation, it fell into place - I was doing stuff with Manchester City and little stuff with TV - and it helped me glide out of it."
A Nottingham Forest youth product, he spent 13 seasons playing in the Premier League during spells with Manchester City, Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers. In 2015, he joined Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls alongside his brother, Bradley. Wright-Phillips joined Phoenix Rising FC in 2017.
The England international scored six goals in 36 appearances for the national team, which included selection for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Wright-Phillips' is the son of the former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright, while his son D'Margio is part of Manchester City's Under-18 team.
