Castillo fans 11 as Reds top Marlins

Luis Castillo struck out 11 batters in six innings to beat his former team as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the host Miami Marlins 8-5 on Tuesday night. Catcher Curt Casali had a big game for the Reds, tying the score 3-3 with a solo homer in the fourth inning and giving Cincinnati a lead it did not relinquish with a two-run single in the fifth.

The Reds also got two-run homers from Eugenio Suarez and Nick Senzel. Suarez, who has a team-best and a career-high 37 homers, leads all National League players with 17 second-half dingers. Senzel, Cincinnati's center fielder and leadoff hitter, went 2-for-3 with a walk, a steal, an outfield assist, three RBIs and the homer. Castillo (13-5), who was traded by the Marlins for the second time on Jan. 19, 2017, improved his career record against Miami to 3-0.

Still, he wasn't entirely sharp, allowing seven hits, two walks, and five runs. Raisel Iglesias picked up his 27th save of the season, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He inherited a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth and retired the only batter he faced in the frame, Martin Prado, on a long fly out. Iglesias then got out of a two-on, two-out predicament in the ninth, inducing a game-ending groundout from Neil Walker. Caleb Smith (8-8) took the loss, allowing five hits, three walks, and five runs in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five.

Smith, who finished August with a 1-4 record and a 7.11 ERA, got off to a poor start as Cincinnati hit three first-inning fly balls that reached at least the warning track. Only one went for a hit -- Suarez's two-run homer. Miami tied the score 2-2 in the bottom of the first. Jon Berti hit a leadoff double to left, Walker drew a two-out walk, and rookie Isan Diaz drove them both in with a double off the wall in center. Diaz was then thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple, ending the rally.

The Marlins took a 3-2 lead in the second as their first three batters all singled, with the RBI going to Austin Dean, who ripped a first-pitch, 96 mph fastball to center. That's when Casali took over. He pulled a 3-2 fastball to left in the fourth for his seventh homer of the season, and he added his two-run single in the next frame. Senzel and Miami's Jorge Alfaro traded two-run homers in the sixth. Senzel's RBI single gave Cincinnati an 8-5 lead in the seventh for the final margin.
