This marks the first charges under the EU’s new social media regulations, the Digital Services Act (DSA). This sweeping rulebook demands that online platforms take greater responsibility for user safety and site cleanliness, or face hefty fines.

European Commissioner Thierry Breton stated that X's current blue checkmarks deceive users and infringe upon the DSA. The commission also criticized X's ad transparency and failure to provide researchers access to public data.
