Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and several other portfolios, Dr. Jitendra Singh, announced today that the Government of India is advancing its meteorological capabilities with the procurement and installation of 10 X-Band Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs). These radars are set to significantly enhance weather forecasting and monitoring in the Northeastern states of India and the Lahaul & Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh.

During a response to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Singh outlined the strategic locations for the new radars. In the Northeastern states, radars will be installed at Guwahati, Dhubri, Jorhat, Tezpur, and Silchar in Assam; Aizawl in Mizoram; Dimapur in Nagaland; Imphal in Manipur; and Mandala Top and Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, an X-Band DWR will be installed in the Lahaul & Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh.

Dr. Singh emphasized that these radars are expected to greatly enhance the region's capacity to monitor and respond to weather-related events, which is crucial for effective disaster preparedness and response. He highlighted the importance of these radars in improving weather forecasts for areas prone to sudden and severe weather changes, such as the Himalayan region.

The deployment of these radars is part of a broader initiative by the Government of India to bolster the country's meteorological infrastructure. By providing more accurate and timely weather predictions, the radars are anticipated to contribute significantly to disaster management efforts, potentially saving lives and reducing property damage during extreme weather events.

Dr. Singh expressed confidence that the installation of these radars will strengthen weather monitoring capabilities, thereby supporting better disaster preparedness and enhancing the safety and well-being of citizens in these vulnerable regions.
