Meta Trials Community Notes in Fact-Checking Shift

Meta Platforms Inc. is testing a new fact-checking program, Community Notes, starting March 18. This initiative replaces its previous system, ended in January due to perceived political bias. Community Notes, leveraging a community-driven approach, aims to provide context without penalization, unlike traditional fact-checks, and will launch globally over time.

Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is set to trial its new crowd-sourced fact-checking initiative, Community Notes, from March 18. This move marks a shift away from its traditional fact-checking program, which was terminated in January amidst claims of political bias.

Community Notes will initially employ a rating system inspired by Elon Musk's X, aiming to provide context to viral claims without penalizing posts as traditional fact checks did. Although only U.S. contributors can initially enroll, Meta plans to expand this initiative worldwide in future phases.

The previous fact-checking system had been in place since December 2016 in response to controversies over 'fake news.' Despite criticism from media experts, Meta asserts that Community Notes will foster a more balanced and transparent approach to misinformation on its platforms.
