Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the critical need for increased competition in India's telecom sector, cautioning against reliance on a duopoly. Speaking at the Broadband India Forum, Scindia announced that the government plans to issue guidelines for delicensing the 6 GHz spectrum before August 15. This move aims to foster greater competition and improve wifi services, helping to bridge the digital divide.
The minister echoed the concerns of former TRAI Chairman RS Sharma, who noted the present duopoly dominated by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. Scindia emphasized the importance of developing additional avenues for broadband access to offer consumers affordable alternatives.
While Vodafone Idea struggles with debt and BSNL lags behind in rolling out 4G and 5G services nationwide, Scindia assured that there would soon be more competition, including satellite services. Although he did not specify a timeline for spectrum allocation for satellite communications, Scindia underscored the urgent need for competition in all sectors.
