The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a directive requiring that the Sanchar Saathi fraud reporting app be pre-installed on all new mobile phones manufactured or imported for use in India within 90 days. This move aims to bolster security against fraudulent activities leveraging International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers.
According to the directive dated November 28, the app must also be updated on devices that are already in the market. Manufacturers and importers are required to comply and submit reports to the DoT within 120 days. Non-compliance could result in penalties under the Telecommunications Act 2023.
Furthermore, the DoT emphasized the integration of Sanchar Saathi as a visible and accessible tool for users. This directive comes alongside measures ensuring app-based communication services are routinely linked to user SIM cards, further tightening telecom security.
