Italy's communications watchdog, AGCOM, has called for the European Commission to examine Google's AI-driven search functionalities. The request follows concerns about harm to news publishers and a danger to media pluralism.
AGCOM, serving as Italy's Digital Services Coordinator, referred Google Ireland Ltd to Brussels for a formal evaluation, driven by a complaint from the Italian federation of newspaper publishers, FIEG.
FIEG argues that AI-generated searches deter users from visiting original news sites, endangering the economic viability of smaller, independent publishers. Additionally, the group voiced apprehensions about the reliability of AI-generated information, citing risks of misinformation.
