National Handloom Day is being observed every year on 7th August to honor a large number of weavers of the country and also to provide recognition to the unique industry of the country

India is home to 95 percent of the world handlooms and hand weaving is the largest employer in the country after agriculture. Handloom provides direct and indirect employment to almost 43 lakh of the population of the country.

The world is looking for handmade goods and India could play a vital role to be the world’s handloom supplier. About 95% of the world’s handwoven fabrics comes from India and the number could grow provided the support it needs.

Considering the potential in the sector, the day was celebrated to honor the people engaged in it and to boost growth in this sector. It also seeks to highlight the contribution of handloom to the socio-economic development of the state.

This Union Govt had declared 7th August as the National Handloom to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on this date in 1905 in Calcutta town hall to protest against the influx of British products and to revive domestic products produced in the Country.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the first National Handloom Day on 7th August 2015 in the prestigious centenary hall of Madras University. Since then the country has been continuously observing it.

Similarly, this year too the day is being celebrated with much enthusiasm in many states across India. Many of the states also have launched special schemes to felicitate the people engaged and to boost the production.
