The fugitive Mehul Choksi's executive, Deepak Kulkarni was taken into judicial custody on Monday, November 12 by the Mumbai court for 14 days. He was arrested last week at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata after he landed from Hong Kong.
As far as the absconding owner of Gitanjali Group, Mehul Choksi is concerned, his lawyer told the Mumbai court that he is not fit to travel to India. His lawyer, while supporting his supposed poor health, said that either his statement can be recorded through video conferencing or the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers can visit Antigua and record his statement. The lawyer also gave an alternative saying that if both the above options are not accepted then they need to wait for 3 months until the improvement of his health.
"If his condition improves, he'll come back to record his statement," the lawyer added, as reported by ANI.
On last October 30, Mehul Choksi told a special PMLA Court that it was "medically impossible" for him to get back to India due to his extremely poor health situation. He refuted the claim adding that his exit from the country was not an act of absconder to avert the complaint against him placed by the CBI or Enforcement Directorate, hence he never refused to return. On the other hand, he has also opposed the ED plea to announce him an absconding or fugitive economic offender on varied grounds.
Readers must remember that in October previous year the ED seized assets worth more than 218 crore INR including diamonds and flats abroad alongside a gigantic amount of 13,000 crore INR loan fraud case probe. The agency is incessantly involved in the investigation of money laundering aspect of the alleged USD 2 billion fraud at Punjab National Bank in which the Antiguan citizen (Choksi) and his nephew Nirav Modi are the main accused and both are absconding.
