FSSAI Cracks Down on Misleading '100% Fruit Juice' Claims

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed food business operators to remove claims of '100% fruit juice' from labels and advertisements of reconstituted fruit juices. This directive aims to address misleading marketing practices where the primary ingredient is water, not fruit juice. Compliance is required by September 2024.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a decisive directive to food business operators: eliminate any claims of '100% fruit juice' on labels and advertisements for reconstituted fruit juices. This move comes as part of the regulator's ongoing efforts to ensure transparent and accurate food labeling practices.

According to an official statement, the FSSAI found that several food business operators have been inaccurately marketing reconstituted fruit juices with '100% fruit juice' claims. The regulator stressed that such claims are misleading, especially when the primary ingredient is water rather than actual fruit juice.

Food business operators are instructed to exhaust their existing pre-printed packaging materials by September 1, 2024. Products must comply with sub-regulation 2.3.6 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards & Food Additives) Regulation, 2011, and be labeled in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020.
