Loco Pilots Hail Recognition Amid Call for Better Working Conditions

A union of loco pilots praised the inclusion of 10 Vande Bharat drivers in the third Modi government's swearing-in ceremony but stressed the need for improved working conditions. The union highlighted the challenges faced by loco pilots, especially female drivers, including lack of basic amenities and long duty hours.

The decision to honor 10 Vande Bharat drivers by inviting them to the swearing-in ceremony of the third Modi government has been hailed by a loco pilots' union. However, they reiterated the urgent need for improved working conditions for loco pilots.

The Railway Board's selection of four women and six men from 10 railway zones to attend the oath-taking ceremony, including India's first female train driver Surekha Yadav, was met with satisfaction. But, the union remains concerned about the lack of basic amenities for drivers.

M. Thirumurugan, secretary-general of the Indian Railway Loco Runningmen Organisation (IRLRO), pointed out that despite the symbolic recognition, loco pilots continue to endure poor working conditions with no basic facilities like lunch breaks or washroom access. Female drivers face additional hardships, including no facilities to change menstruation pads and lack of nursing breaks, leading to health issues.
