The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Poste Italiane have finalized a €450 million financing agreement aimed at accelerating the digital transformation and sustainability of Italy's logistics and postal services. The contract, signed today in Rome by EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti and Poste Italiane CEO Matteo Del Fante, outlines ambitious plans to modernize operations and enhance service efficiency.
The investment focuses on several strategic initiatives, including the establishment of new parcel sorting centers, particularly the first one in southern Italy. This move is part of a broader strategy to automate and digitalize logistics processes, migrate software platforms to cloud-based solutions, and integrate artificial intelligence tools to streamline business operations. Improvements in physical and IT security are also prioritized to bolster customer service across physical and digital channels.
A significant portion of the loan will fund green initiatives, supporting investments in energy efficiency upgrades and the electrification of Poste Italiane's vehicle fleet. These efforts are integral to transitioning Poste Italiane from a traditional postal service provider to a comprehensive logistics operator, aligning operations with economic and environmental sustainability goals.
The EIB has been a longstanding partner of Poste Italiane for approximately 25 years, with prior agreements totaling nearly €3.3 billion. This collaboration has driven the digitalization of services, expanded IT and logistics infrastructure, and promoted sustainable mobility and energy efficiency.
"Our collaboration with Poste Italiane exemplifies how financial institutions can facilitate innovation, sustainability, and energy efficiency in large corporations," stated EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti. "This financing marks a pivotal moment in enabling Poste Italiane to adapt and thrive in a rapidly evolving market, delivering increasingly efficient and sustainable services to both individuals and businesses."
"This initiative supports our strategic role as Italy's leading logistics operator and advances the digital transformation journey we initiated in recent years," commented Poste Italiane CEO Matteo Del Fante. "These new projects will enhance our infrastructure capacity, particularly in automated parcel handling, enabling us to meet the growing demand for e-commerce-related logistics services sustainably."
The agreement underscores a shared commitment to advancing Italy's logistics sector while fostering innovation and sustainability in service delivery.
