India-Bangladesh Border Trade and Immigration Centre Reopens

After four years of closure due to COVID-19, the India-Bangladesh border trade and immigration centre in Assam's South Salmara district has reopened. The closure had created significant challenges for locals and visitors, particularly students, traders, and patients. Officials, including MLA Aminul Islam, attended the reopening ceremony.

After a four-year hiatus brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the border trade and immigration centre along the India-Bangladesh boundary in Assam's South Salmara district has officially reopened on Thursday, according to an official statement.

Present at the reopening ceremony were Mankachar's AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam and senior district officials. Islam highlighted the difficulties faced by students, traders, and patients from Bangladesh who sought medical treatment in the state due to the centre's prolonged closure.

Over the past four years, individuals from the lower and central regions of Assam were compelled to travel to Bangladesh either via Meghalaya's Dawki or Kolkata, causing significant inconvenience. Assam has two immigration centres for Bangladesh; the one in Karimganj district reopened earlier after its pandemic-induced closure, and now the centre in Mankachar follows suit. The state shares a 262-km-long border with Bangladesh.
