India's Commerce Secretary Pushes for Trade Resolutions at BRICS Summit

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal held key meetings with Russian and UAE ministers to address pressing bilateral trade issues. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal engaged in pivotal bilateral discussions with Russian and UAE ministers at the recent BRICS Trade Ministers' meeting in Moscow. The primary aim was to resolve ongoing trade issues and establish a roadmap for future trade growth.

During the meeting, Barthwal highlighted the significance of increasing bilateral trade with Russia to USD 100 billion by 2030 and addressed the trade imbalance caused by the surge in imports from Russia. India's focus on electronics, shrimp, and pharmaceuticals will be crucial in boosting exports to Russia.

Barthwal also stressed the importance of WTO reforms, including a two-tier Dispute Settlement system, and called for enhanced cooperation among MSMEs through research, technology transfers, and joint ventures, particularly in sectors critical for a green transition and climate resilience.
