India's Bullet Train Ambition: A Journey Towards Self-Reliance

India is developing bullet trains using indigenous technology, with comprehensive support from Japan for initial projects such as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail. The ambitious project includes India's first undersea tunnel and aims for self-reliance in technology. Key construction milestones have been achieved, accelerating progress post-2022.

India is making strides in developing bullet trains with indigenous technology, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Wednesday. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw highlighted the complexity of the bullet train project, the first of which is under construction between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The project is being implemented with significant help from Japan, ensuring high safety and maintenance standards.

The minister explained that the 508-km route will cover 12 stations and will include India’s first undersea rail tunnel. Work has been advancing rapidly since 2022, following the BJP-Shiv Sena government's rise to power in Maharashtra. Currently, crucial construction milestones such as pier foundation and girder launching have reached significant progress.

Vaishnaw emphasized India's goal to become technologically self-reliant, developing future bullet trains entirely with indigenous technology. He also noted the nation’s progress with the operational Vande Bharat trains, reinforcing the commitment to modernizing railway infrastructure.
