Singapore Airlines (SIA) on Thursday resumed its standard in-flight service procedures following alterations made in response to the severe turbulence incident in May that disastrously affected flight SQ321, causing one fatality and multiple injuries.

The airline had ceased meal services when the seatbelt sign was illuminated as a precautionary measure post-incident during the London-Singapore flight on May 21. However, from August 1, 2024, at 0001hrs Singapore time, SIA flights will return to their standard in-flight service protocols, according to an SIA spokesperson.

Despite the shift, SIA's pilots retain the discretion to halt or continue in-flight services when the seat belt sign is on, based on their assessment of current weather and operational conditions. Notably, hot beverages like soup will still not be served when the sign is on. In the wake of the SQ321 event, SIA tightened its in-flight turbulence response measures as a preemptive action, allowing them time to conduct a thorough review of their protocols, which were verified to meet industry best practices and safety standards. Ongoing refresher courses have equipped pilots and cabin crews with updated knowledge and skills to manage turbulence risks, assist passengers effectively, and maintain safety. Additionally, periodic reminders are now shown to passengers on in-flight entertainment screens to emphasize the importance of fastening seat belts at all times. "Customers should always follow the instructions of our pilots and cabin crew, and keep their seat belts fastened while seated at all times," a spokesperson advised, reiterating that passenger and staff safety remains paramount.
