India's Economic Promise: Growth Amid Global Challenges
S&P Global Ratings highlighted India's economic growth and external financial strengths among South Asian countries. According to Andrew Wood, Director of Sovereign & International Public Finance Ratings (Asia-Pacific), India's fiscal deficit trajectory will significantly impact its sovereign rating. The 2024-25 budget aims to reduce the central government's fiscal deficit, influencing future ratings.
S&P Global Ratings on Tuesday highlighted India's unique position in terms of growth and external financial metrics among South Asian countries. The direction of India's sovereign ratings will be heavily influenced by the government's fiscal deficit trajectory. Andrew Wood, S&P's Director of Sovereign and International Public Finance Ratings (Asia-Pacific), emphasized the potential of India's economy despite global challenges.
Wood stated that the agency could raise India's rating if the fiscal deficit narrows significantly, reducing the net general government deficit to below 7 percent of GDP on a structural basis. He noted that India's status as a net external creditor supports its investment-grade rating and contributes to its economic growth story.
In the 2024-25 budget, the central government targets a fiscal deficit of 4.9 percent of GDP, down from the earlier 5.1 percent. However, when combined with local government deficits, the general government deficit is projected to remain above 7 percent of GDP for the current fiscal year. This deficit trajectory will be crucial for determining India's future sovereign ratings. In May, S&P upgraded India's sovereign rating outlook to positive from stable, citing strong growth prospects and prudent public spending, anticipating potential rating upgrades within two years contingent on continued fiscal discipline and reforms.
