Sterling reached a one-month high against the dollar while staying flat against the yen on Tuesday.

Investors are eagerly awaiting business activity data on Thursday and remarks from Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey during a central bankers' meeting in Jackson Hole on Friday. Recent data indicates improvement in the British retail sector as the adverse effects of high inflation on consumer spending begin to wane.

Citi noted its focus would be on Bailey's remarks, particularly on whether he will reinforce the notion that the transmission of monetary policy is already largely completed. The pound climbed 0.15% against the dollar to $1.3002, achieving $1.3012 at its peak—the highest level since July 17.

The dollar hit a seven-month low on Tuesday, with traders anticipating insights on Friday at Jackson Hole regarding the Fed's pace of monetary easing. Money markets have priced in 40 basis points of rate cuts by year-end, suggesting a 25 bps move and a 60% chance of another cut.

Euro/sterling increased by 0.2% to 85.18 pence per euro. Forex strategist Kamal Sharma from BofA commented, "All else being equal, the case for higher sterling versus euro, yen, and Swiss franc remains compelling," noting reduced long positioning and high momentum metrics in popular pound carry trades.

Nonetheless, the British currency remains susceptible to near-term volatility, with geopolitical tensions particularly in the Middle East posing a risk. "Sterling is unlikely to be singled out during a geopolitical crisis," Sharma added.

Sterling is perceived as a currency that thrives when investors have a high risk appetite. While it remained flat versus the yen at 190.30, it had earlier hit its highest level since January at around 180 in early August.
