The government has unveiled an ambitious internship programme aimed at benefiting one crore youth over five years by offering Rs 60,000 annually per participant. This initiative was announced in the Union Budget 2024 as part of the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme, offering positions in top companies with the added advantage of insurance coverage.
Launching in December, the programme will be facilitated through an online portal managed by the corporate affairs ministry. Eligible candidates, aged between 21 and 24, can begin the application process from the second week of October, with the first batch ready to commence by the end of this year. Firms participating in the pilot have been selected based on their CSR expenditure over the past three years.
Participating companies will commit to a 12-month internship period, with half of the tenure dedicated to practical job exposure rather than classroom learning. The government will cover a significant portion of the interns' monthly financial support, while a nominal contribution will be expected from the participating companies. Additional incidental expenses and insurance premiums will also be borne by the government for these young interns.
