In a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to a reciprocal tariff policy, ensuring that tariffs imposed by other nations, such as India, are matched by the United States to promote equitable trade. Trump asserted, 'We are a reciprocal nation. Whether it's India or another country with low tariffs, we will impose equivalent tariffs.'
Trump also addressed the deeper trade difficulties with the European Union and China, citing exorbitant tariffs and unfair practices as major hurdles. 'The European Union poses significant challenges for us. They impose taxes on our companies at unprecedented levels, creating an unequal playing field. We are dissatisfied with this situation,' he noted solemnly.
Discussing China, Trump claimed his administration has taken a stronger stance than its predecessors. 'China has been a major issue. Before my presidency, we did not receive a dime from them. Since my tenure, hundreds of billions have been collected to ensure fairness. That is what I've achieved,' he stated. Trump mentioned past unsuccessful tariff reduction talks with India, leading to the U.S.'s reciprocal approach.
