Taiwan's AT-5 Brave Eagle Suffers Setback After Engine Failure

An advanced jet trainer aircraft, the AT-5 Brave Eagle, has faced its first significant setback after experiencing engine failure on a training mission, Taiwan's air force reported on Saturday. The incident saw the pilot bail out safely as the aircraft crashed into the sea, sparking a military investigation.

The AT-5 Brave Eagle, developed by the state-owned Aerospace Industrial Development Corp, is part of Taiwan's efforts to enhance its domestic defense capabilities amid increasing military tensions with China. The aircraft, which had 183 flying hours, took off from Chihhang air base with weapons training targets, but reported dual engine failure mid-flight.

This occurrence is a concern for Taiwan's air force, which aims to acquire 66 units by 2026 to replace its older AT-3 and F-5 models. Despite relying heavily on U.S. military equipment, Taiwan is prioritizing homegrown defense advancements to strengthen its sovereignty against external threats, particularly from China.
