Revving Up: Mumbai's Electric Bus Transition Hits a New Gear

Mumbai's BEST is advancing its move to electric buses by training drivers at Dindoshi. This comes after an accident exposed training gaps. With increased e-bus routes and new contracts for supply, the transition is expected to enhance commuting services significantly, improving efficiency and service availability.

Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking is revamping its driver training program following a fatal accident in Kurla that highlighted the need for specialized instruction on electric buses. The training, now conducted at the Dindoshi centre, underscores the challenges and adjustments brought by the new technology.

The tragic incident on SG Barve Marg exposed the potential pitfalls of insufficient training, as the driver had received only three days of instruction. In response, a panel of experts recommended deploying dedicated training buses, leading to the introduction of an adapted 12-meter e-bus from Olectra for this purpose.

Despite past delays, BEST is on track to enhance its fleet with new e-buses, boosting commuter services. The undertaking plans to significantly expand its electric fleet, with 4500 more e-buses expected, which promises to alleviate congestion and increase service efficiency for Mumbai's daily commuters.
