The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced on Thursday its plans to deter cable thefts that frequently disrupt metro services on various lines.
Following a recent incident between Seelampur and Welcome stations that caused a four-hour delay, DMRC will reinforce cable security by using cement covers, anti-theft clamps, and additional barriers such as concertina coils over cable trays. The corporation is also testing surveillance measures like drones and CCTV cameras in high-risk areas.
DMRC reported 89 cases of cable theft since June 2024, with 35 involving traction cables, 32 of signalling cables, and 22 of electrical cables. Cable damage leads to service delays, especially during peak hours when trains have a tight schedule.
