GE Aerospace achieved a significant milestone on Wednesday by delivering the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for India's Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mk 1A. The engine delivery underscores a pivotal step in their longstanding collaboration to strengthen India's defense capabilities.

The F404-IN20 engine, specifically designed for India's fighter jet, boasts the highest thrust in its family, featuring a higher-flow fan and unique single-crystal turbine blades. Recognized globally, the F404 engine powers thousands of combat aircraft and has cemented its reputation as one of the most successful in military aviation history, according to GE Aerospace.

Following an initial order in 2016, GE Aerospace delivered 65 engines to HAL. After a hiatus, the production line was revived when HAL ordered an additional 99 engines in 2021. This required re-engaging the engine's global supply chain. GE Aerospace and Tejas teams have jointly customized the engine to suit the Indian Air Force's requirements, showcasing a commitment to empowering India's military development.

The engine, first tested in a 2008 flight reaching Mach 1.1, has proven to be suitable for the Tejas LCA. GE Aerospace heralds the recent delivery as a symbol of what has been accomplished with HAL over four decades, a partnership vital to advancing India's defense manufacturing and next-generation fighter jet development.

GE Aerospace's collaboration in India's military aviation began in the 1980s, and the selection of the F404-IN20 for Tejas in 2004 marked a breakthrough for both GE and India. This week's engine delivery reaffirms their continued partnership to bolster India's defense industry.
