Stable Prices: Government Efforts Keep Food Commodities in Check

Food commodity prices in India have remained stable through active government monitoring and timely interventions, with tomatoes showing a price dip due to better supply. Food commodity prices in India have largely remained stable in the current year, as asserted by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. The central government's strategic monitoring has ensured timely interventions in price fluctuations, aiding overall stability.

During July 2025, a notable 14% decrease in the cost of a homemade thali underscored the continued moderation of food inflation, the ministry stated. Tomatoes, a critical vegetable, have encountered price variations due to temporary localised factors instead of fundamental supply-demand imbalances.

The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) has been actively procuring tomatoes from Azadpur Mandi since August, distributing them at minimal profit margins. Despite weather-related disruptions, average retail prices in Delhi have started to decline, with Chennai and Mumbai maintaining lower rates due to favorable conditions. The all-India average remains under control compared to previous years, backed by high production of potatoes and onions, ensuring sufficient supply and reduced prices.”
