In a groundbreaking initiative, Andhra Pradesh's 'Stree Shakti' scheme has seen over 12 lakh women benefitting from free bus services within the first 30 hours of its launch. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu unveiled this scheme on August 15 at Vijayawada's Pandit Nehru Bus Station, aimed at empowering women, girls, and transgender individuals across the state.

The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated a significant Rs 1,942 crore annually, as the 'Stree Shakti' service anticipates recovering costs through government reimbursements for issued zero-fare tickets. The scheme covers various APSRTC services, ensuring beneficiaries can travel without charge on specific routes throughout the state.

Chief Minister Naidu, actively monitoring the scheme's progression, directed increased coverage, especially in ghat routes, ensuring wider reach due to growing demand. While starting the scheme amid festivities like Janmashtami, officials expect a surge in ridership, especially as women employees plan to utilize the service from the upcoming workweek.
