GST Reforms: Too Little, Too Late?

The Congress party has voiced strong criticism against the recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms implemented by the Modi government. According to the opposition, the changes, which include reduced rates on several items, come too late and do not adequately address existing issues.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress' general secretary in charge of communications, highlighted concerns that the benefits from tax reductions may not reach consumers. Furthermore, he claimed the government's procedural adjustments were insufficient, lacking in necessary simplifications.

Ramesh also noted the irony of Prime Minister Modi's current support, considering his previous opposition to GST during his tenure as Gujarat chief minister. Despite the rate cuts, ongoing debates over state compensation and the overall impact on consumers remain unresolved.
