In a significant development for regional air travel in India, the government announced on Tuesday the continuation of the UDAN scheme beyond April 2027. This initiative has played a pivotal role in operationalizing 649 routes, linking 93 underutilized airports over nine years.

Launched on October 21, 2016, the UDAN scheme facilitated its inaugural flight between Shimla and Delhi on April 27, 2017. Since then, it has connected 93 unserved and underserved airports, including 15 heliports and two water aerodromes, serving over 1.56 crore passengers through 3.23 lakh flights, according to the Civil Aviation Ministry.

With over Rs 4,300 crore disbursed for Viability Gap Funding and an investment of Rs 4,638 crore in airport development, the Civil Aviation Secretary, Samir Kumar Sinha, underlined the ministry's commitment to expand the UDAN Framework, focusing on connecting hilly and northeastern regions and developing 120 new destinations.
