India's Semiconductor Revolution: From Vision to Reality

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed semiconductor chip plants in Gandhinagar, noting significant progress in India's electronics manufacturing. Pilot production has started at key sites, and the launch of the first OSAT facility marks a milestone. The government's initiatives are steering India towards becoming a major player in semiconductor manufacturing.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, conducted an inspection in Gandhinagar, assessing four semiconductor chip plants in various development stages. The meeting, attended by prominent state officials including Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, highlighted significant progress in these projects, according to the Minister.

Vaishnaw reiterated India's emphasis on electronics manufacturing and semiconductor fabrication, which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the country's technological growth. He revealed that three plants are nearing adequate production capacity, with pilot operations underway at the Kaynes and CG sites. Micron's mini-plant has commenced pilot production, and the mega plant in Dholera is advancing rapidly, expected to become a central high-tech hub.

Semiconductors are crucial to modern technology, powering vital sectors like healthcare, communication, and defence. India's rapid transformation in the semiconductor sector since the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission in 2021 underscores its strategic ambitions. Supported by a Rs 76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI), India recently launched its first end-to-end OSAT Pilot Line Facility in Sanand, marking a pivotal step in semiconductor manufacturing. Among the ten government-approved projects with over Rs 1.60 lakh crore in investment, the focus now is on gearing up for Semicon 2.0, the next phase of India's semiconductor programme.
