The election process for the council took place during the 34th session of the IMO Assembly in London, with results indicating that India received 154 out of 169 valid votes cast. This victory marks a continued presence for India in the organization's decision-making body for the 2026-27 biennium.
The IMO Council functions as an executive organ between Assembly sessions, encompassing three categories with a total of 40 elected members from 176 nations.
