Delhi has reported a troubling increase in road accident fatalities, with 2025 emerging as the deadliest year on record since 2019. Official statistics reveal that 1,617 individuals lost their lives in 1,578 fatal accidents in the year, a notable rise from the 1,551 deaths recorded in 2024.
This disturbing trend marks an increase in not just the number of fatal accidents, which rose by 4.92%, but also a 4.26% rise in fatalities compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, overall accident numbers increased slightly by 0.57%, yet the severity of these incidents grew, with a noticeable surge in both fatalities and serious injuries.
Experts attribute this rise to increased traffic density, higher vehicle speeds, and persistent violations such as drunk driving and red-light jumping. Despite continued enforcement efforts and awareness campaigns, achieving behavioral change among commuters remains an ongoing challenge for authorities.
