Prabhu promises integrated action plan to transform logistics sector

The government will soon launch an integrated action plan for the country's logistics sector to reduce cost and enhance efficiency, Union Minister Suresh Prabhu said Tuesday. The commerce and industry minister also announced that India will launch its first logistics portal in days to come.

His remarks came at the launch of a programme for creating an integrated, forward-looking, all-encompassing action plan for the country's logistics sector. "The plan will be implemented as soon as possible. In fact, a draft is ready, but we are adding new dimensions to it so that everybody is involved. Soon, India will launch its first logistics portal in which many of the issues will be properly addressed," Prabhu told reporters here.

He said the government is also trying to ensure more accountability for those who handle multiple transport solutions. "We will also ensure that people who avail themselves of these services get a one window solution as well as because their accountability has been established, they will get a lot of respite and help from this solution," said the minister.

He highlighted that the plan will look at legislative, administrative, organisational, financial, technological and all other aspects of the issues related to logistics. "Therefore we are working on it and I am sure once it is done India's major challenge of the high cost of logistics and very low efficiency in logistics despite having so many ministries dealing with it will be addressed," Prabhu said.
