The Union Budget has allocated over Rs 11,400 crore to the Northeastern states' railway sector, marking a five-fold increase from a decade ago, announced Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This investment aims to boost connectivity and infrastructure in the region, with projects progressing well, including those connecting Bhutan and enhancing intra-regional networks.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the deployment of AI-based thermal cameras and intensive detection technology to protect wildlife, specifically elephants near railway tracks. This reflects a commitment to environmental considerations alongside developmental projects.
Key projects under the new funding include extending the high-speed corridor to Guwahati, completing track electrification, and redeveloping 60 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These efforts are poised to improve regional connectivity, tourism, and overall development under the Act East Policy.
