AirAsia has made a historic order of 150 Airbus A220-300 jets, valued at $19 billion, marking the largest single purchase of this aircraft model. The move aims to enhance fleet efficiency and manage rising costs. Deliveries are set to begin in 2028, promising new market opportunities.
In a historic move for the aviation industry, budget airline AirAsia has announced an order of 150 Airbus A220-300 jets, valued at approximately USD 19 billion at list prices. This marks the largest single order ever placed for the A220 jets, highlighting AirAsia's strategic plans for fleet modernisation.
AirAsia's acquisition, announced at Airbus' Mirabel factory in Quebec with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in attendance, underlines the airline's ambition to enhance operational efficiency amidst escalating fuel costs. The fuel-efficient A220 jets are poised to offer a significant boost for the airline, emitting less carbon and promising better market reach.
The deal allows for greater flexibility within AirAsia's fleet, slated for deliveries starting in 2028. The airline intends to leverage these jets to penetrate smaller markets in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, redistributing larger aircraft for longer-haul routes and optimizing cost management.
