DMK MPs Protest: Clash Over Language Policy in India's Parliament

In a heated demonstration on Tuesday, MPs of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) took a stand against the three-language formula included in the new National Education Policy (NEP) within Parliament's premises. Their core demand was an apology from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who recently criticized the Tamil Nadu government.

Clad in black, the MPs displayed banners accusing the BJP of manipulation while championing Tamil Nadu's educational stance. A vocal critic of the policy, MDMK MP Vaiko, recalled the sacrifices made during the anti-Hindi agitations, emphasizing the state's firm opposition to Hindi dominance. He accused Minister Pradhan of forcing the policy despite widespread disapproval.

Tensions ran high as the DMK's stance led to a 30-minute adjournment of Lok Sabha proceedings. The central issue remained the implementation of PM SHRI, a scheme promoting centrally managed schools, which the state has hesitated to adopt. Critics argue the two-language system suffices, with English as a global connector and Tamil preserving local identity.
