In Manipur's Loktak Lake, the unique floating elementary school is fighting to preserve its existence against multiple odds. Established in 2017 to serve the children of the fishing community, the school is anchored on phumdis — floating islands of aquatic vegetation.
Despite the dedication of the local community and organizations, the school lacks essential government support. Classes, constrained by minimal infrastructure, continue amid ethnic violence and logistical hurdles. The institution currently educates 23 young students but remains unrecognized by official authorities.
With scarce resources, the villagers rely on makeshift solutions to keep the school afloat, both literally and metaphorically. The struggle underscores the broader challenges faced by the community, including the lack of safe drinking water and basic amenities.
