Tensions mounted outside Bikash Bhavan, the West Bengal education department headquarters, as a protest by the Students' Federation of India (SFI) took a chaotic turn on Tuesday. Protesters demanded clarity on college admissions and Joint Entrance Examination results, leading to a police crackdown and multiple detentions.
Before the protest commenced, SFI state committee member Subhajit Sarkar, along with another leader, faced detention by police, according to officials. Sarkar condemned the action, asserting that their gathering aimed to peacefully submit a deputation concerning the start of college classes and the declaration of JEE results.
The main procession, scheduled for 1 pm, faced delays due to the initial police action and reached the venue at around 2:30 pm. Authorities stated that the protest lacked official permission, resulting in a significant police presence at Bikash Bhavan throughout the day to prevent further unrest.
