Bodoland University students caused upheaval at the BTC secretariat on Saturday, protesting against the Assam cabinet's decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities. Armed with grievances, they broke through barriers and allegedly damaged property within the assembly hall, officials reported.

The protest saw tribal students march for six kilometers, demanding a retraction of the cabinet's approval. The demonstrators claimed the move threatens the rights of existing tribes in the region. Enhanced security measures were implemented as negotiations were held with officials, including District Commissioner Masanda M Pertin.

In a show of solidarity, the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and other tribal organizations staged a separate protest, highlighting concerns that the ST status extension could dilute protective measures for current tribes, impacting educational and job opportunities. Tensions linger as the community awaits the state's response.
