An intense standoff occurred at Assam's Tezpur University as students held the Ministry of Education's high-level team inside the campus, demanding the removal of the vice-chancellor over financial irregularities. The blockade was lifted after university authorities assured that the current VC would not officiate pending an inquiry.
The visiting team, led by UGC Chairman Vineet Joshi, engaged in discussions with students, faculty, and staff, eventually addressing the core demands for leadership changes. Registrar in-charge Chandan Goswami confirmed that the acting authority will now be Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharyya, the senior-most faculty member.
The persistence of the university community has been evident since late November, culminating in cancelled examinations and an ongoing protest supported by faculty and staff. The confrontation underscores broader grievances, including ecological concerns under the VC's administration, illustrating a deep-rooted frustration among the university members.
