Several villages in South Goa district have passed resolutions opposing the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Sunburn Festival, expected to be held later this year, citing concerns over drug culture promotion. Despite the backlash, the tourism sector has rallied in support of the event, highlighting its substantial revenue generation for the state.
In Gram Sabha meetings held on Sunday, seven villages — Chicalim, Carmona, Nuvem, Varca, Sarzora, Chinchinim, and Camorlim — resolved to deny permissions for the Sunburn Festival 2024. The resolutions argue that the festival fuels drug culture and causes local disruptions, including traffic congestion.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte disclosed that festival organizers have not yet sought approval. 'We will comment on the festival only after receiving their application,' he stated. Meanwhile, the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) and the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry have voiced strong support, emphasizing the event's economic significance. TTAG president Jack Sukhija called for proper planning to balance festival success with local impact.
