China pulled off a stunning performance in rhythmic gymnastics on Saturday, becoming the first non-European country to win Olympic gold in the group event. The Chinese team edged out Israel and Italy with a total of 69.800 points.
The five-woman team showcased two routines—one with hoops and the other with ribbons and balls. They topped the eight-team final in hoops and ranked third in the other portion, finishing 0.950 points ahead of Israel. Italy took the bronze, trailing China by 1.700 points.
This silver is Israel's first in rhythmic gymnastics. Bulgaria, the defending Olympic champion, slipped to fourth. Russia's absence due to the Ukraine war opened the podium for new victors. China's victory indicates the expanding global footprint of a sport long dominated by European countries.
