The Legendary Life and Controversial Legacy of Alain Delon
Celebrated French actor Alain Delon, known for his roles in postwar films and controversial connections with underworld figures, has passed away at 88. Delon rose to fame with striking performances in the 1960s, but his life was marred by personal and public controversies, including his outspoken political views.
French actor Alain Delon, who captured the hearts of millions with his roles ranging from a murderer to a hitman during the postwar era, has died at the age of 88, French media reported on Sunday.
Suffering poor health since a 2019 stroke, Delon had rarely left his estate in Douchy, located in France's Val de Loire region. Known for his striking blue eyes, Delon was dubbed the "French Frank Sinatra," a comparison he disliked. Unlike Sinatra, who denied Mafia ties, Delon was open about his friendships with underworld figures.
In a 1970 New York Times interview, Delon addressed these associations, stating, "Most of the gangsters I know were my friends before I became an actor. Each is responsible for his own acts; it doesn't matter what he does."
