Kiran Rao's film 'Laapataa Ladies', a Hindi satire on patriarchy, has been selected as India's official entry for the Oscars 2025. The Hindi film, a satire addressing issues of patriarchy, topped a competitive shortlist of 29 films, including notable titles like Bollywood's 'Animal', Malayalam National Award winner 'Aattam', and Cannes winner 'All We Imagine As Light'.

A 13-member selection committee led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua unanimously chose 'Laapataa Ladies', produced by Aamir Khan and Rao, to contend in the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards. Other films in contention included Tamil film 'Maharaja', Telugu titles 'Kalki 2898 AD' and 'Hanu-Man', and Hindi films 'Swatantraya Veer Savarkar' and 'Article 370'. The Malayalam hit '2018: Everyone is a Hero' had been sent the previous year.
