Election Posters Continue to Flood Delhi University Despite Removal Notices

Despite a 24-hour ultimatum from the chief election officer to remove election-related posters and banners, Delhi University campuses remain covered with campaign material. Violations of the Lyngdoh Committee norms and the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act continue, with daily fines being issued. Enforcement remains weak, and aggressive campaigning tactics disrupt student life.

A spot check revealed that campaign material still litters both North and South campuses, along with pamphlets scattered on roads in various colors

On Monday, the chief election officer for the 2024-25 DUSU elections issued notices to candidates to remove all posters and banners within 24 hours. However, enforcement of the rules remains weak, as violations are still visible across the campus.

The continued display of campaign posters violates the norms set by the Lyngdoh Committee governing student elections.

According to Chief Election Officer Satyapal Singh, the authorities are closely monitoring violations and plan to take immediate action.

Defacement of property also violates the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007. A traffic constable noted the issuance of over 50 daily challans for such violations, but campaign material routinely resurfaces, causing traffic disruptions and contributing to paper waste.

Students have expressed concerns over aggressive campaign tactics that disrupt classrooms and lead to significant paper waste. Despite previous interventions like orders from the National Green Tribunal, election-related defacement and paper waste remain rampant.
