The Maharashtra Government on Monday declared indigenous cows as 'Rajyamata-Gomata', citing their significance since the Vedic period, an official notification stated.
Factors influencing this decision include the nutritional value of indigenous cow milk for humans, their use in ayurveda and panchgavya treatment, and the benefits of cow manure in organic farming, according to a government resolution issued by the state Agriculture, Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department.
This decision, announced ahead of the state assembly elections, highlights the spiritual, scientific, and historical importance of cows in Indian society, an official noted. It underscores the cow's essential role in India's cultural landscape for centuries.
By recognizing the agricultural advantages of cow dung, which enhances soil fertility and contributes to human nutrition, the state government is also promoting sustainable farming practices, the official added.
